Slate

Artist Statement:

I came to letter carving after the death of my baby daughter Martha. I wanted her memorial to be something special and when I came across Memorials by Artists (now The Lettering Arts Trust), I felt a huge relief that it was possible to create something meaningful and beautiful. 

Several courses later, with John Neilson, Ieuan Rees and Tom Perkins, I felt confident enough to open my own workshop in Cowbridge, South Wales, in 2015. 

I enjoy the collaborative process and doing my best to translate the clients' wishes into unique items designed and carved by hand in slate, sandstone or limestone.

John Neilson and Ieuan Rees have been a huge influence in teaching me how to draw, design and see letter forms. I also feel a resonance with the work of David Jones, John Skelton and Jack Trowbridge.
