Dual Text Alphabet 3
In the main alphabet the ascenders and descenders fall within the x-height of the letters, thereby in effect creating two x-heights but giving a solidity to the lowercase that it does not normally have. By overlapping these shapes they become almost monumental. The carving of all the different planes makes the carving a more interesting job than ‘just’ v-carving.
As a contrast I used a flourished alphabet – (first used on Incisive Letterwork’s oldest dual text ‘Inceptis Gravibus’) to bring the Robert Bringhurst text
alive. If you look carefully you can see that every other letter is flourished, the in between ones are simple Roman shapes.
