Simon Langsdale
I am a letter carver with a background as a calligrapher and a love of history and crafts, all of which inform my lettering design.
As a child, the pen and ink line drawings in comics and illustrations in children’s books fascinated me. Before I could read, I would interpret the drawn lines as if they were words themselves.
My work consists mainly of memorials but I also undertake public art commissions, plaques and stones for gardens. I also exhibit and make smaller pieces as gifts. Whether I am making a memorial or a piece for a garden setting, my aim is to listen closely to my clients so that I can interpret their ideas with sensitivity to create work that has meaning for them.
The teaching of both calligraphy and letter carving is a very important part of my practice as it allows me to pass on my skills to others so that they can enjoy the joy of creating hand-made lettering. As we become an ever-more digitised world, using our hands to make things is I believe, becoming an essential need for our well-being.
After completing the last year of the full-time calligraphy and bookbinding course at the University of Roehampton (2006-07) under Sue Hufton and Hazel Dolby, I then undertook further training for a year with the letter carver Tom Perkins and the calligrapher Gaynor Goffe. I also completed the Society of Scribes and Illuminators part-time, three year Advanced Training Scheme for calligraphers. For over a decade, I further developed my letter carving and design skills through training and working several times a year with the letter carver Chris Elsey. I established my own workshop in 2011 and am now based at Parndon Mill, Harlow, on the Essex/Hertfordshire border.
